Before the Warsaw concert of the Spanish band ANKOR, we had the opportunity to talk with drummer Eleni Nota. Originally, the interview was supposed to be with the vocalist, Jessie Williams, but there was a last-minute change. The artist told us about her inspirations, musical journey, and future plans. We also learned about the band’s upcoming projects.<\/p>

Our first question was originally intended for Jessie, as we wanted to ask about joining the band in 2014.<\/p>

I\u2019m not sure if I can answer that since I wasn\u2019t in the band at that time.<\/p>

Yes, we\u2019re aware of that, so I\u2019ll ask you the same question, but in your context\u2014how did it happen for you?<\/p>

EN<\/strong>
It was in September 2022, at the beginning of the month. It was incredible and very unexpected. It really caught me off guard. I had just left my previous band, Nervosa, where I had played for several years. Literally a day later, Jessie wrote to me, asking if I would be interested in joining the band and if I could learn the setlist very quickly because they had a concert in a week and had suddenly found themselves without a drummer. I said, \u201cOkay,\u201d and immediately started learning the songs.
I flew to Spain, we had one rehearsal, and that was it\u2014we played the show. The venue was packed, so it was a bit crazy. That\u2019s when I thought, \u201cOh, I have a band now!\u201d [laughs]. We played the concert and, at the same time, shot the music video for Prisoner<\/em>. It was total madness but also an amazing experience. Two and a half years later, I\u2019m still here, very happy, and everything is going great.<\/p>

Your latest album contains many references to Japanese culture. Is there a specific aspect of this culture that you especially want to incorporate into the band’s music?<\/p>

EN<\/strong>
Definitely! There are a lot of Japanese influences in our music. The guys have been fans of everything related to Japan for many years. They\u2019ve toured Japan twice\u2014before I was in the band\u2014but they always tell me stories about those tours because they absolutely loved it. They constantly watch anime, read manga, and love anime soundtracks\u2014it\u2019s their world, and they want to showcase it in every possible way, whether through visuals, lyrics, or song titles. Japanese elements will definitely continue to be a part of the band\u2019s future because we all love them.<\/p>

MS<\/strong>
Which Japanese bands are your favorites?<\/p>

EN<\/strong>
One of our favorites is SiM, which also created the soundtrack for Attack on Titan<\/em>. Honestly, I don\u2019t know that many other bands\u2014it’s mostly the rest of the band who are really into Japanese music. We really like Hanabie, and of course, they love anime soundtracks, like those from Naruto<\/em>. To be honest, I\u2019m the least enthusiastic about it in the band\u2014I like it, but I don\u2019t have the same obsession as the others.<\/p>

Have you heard of the band Crossfaith?<\/p>

EN<\/strong>
Oh, yes! We all love them. I almost always forget to mention them. I think I love them the most. Good choice\u2014thanks for reminding me! [laughs]<\/p>

Which drummer inspired you to start playing drums?<\/p>

EN<\/strong>
That\u2019s an easy answer\u2014Joey Jordison from Slipknot, their first drummer! He\u2019s the reason I started playing drums. The first song I tried to play was probably People = Shit<\/em> or something like that. I was really young\u2014about ten years old. The older brother of my best friend sent me a YouTube video, and I thought, \u201cI want to do this!\u201d I had never seen a drummer live before or even a real drum kit in person. But as soon as I saw that, I started begging my mom to sign me up for music lessons.<\/p>

Do you have any favorite movies? Or are there any films that have influenced ANKOR’s music videos?<\/p>

EN<\/strong>
Our guitarist David creates all our music videos\u2014he\u2019s the cameraman\u2014and he mainly draws inspiration from anime. He\u2019s addicted to Naruto<\/em>, Dragon Ball<\/em>, and that kind of stuff. If I had to name a movie he often mentions, it would be Interstellar<\/em>.<\/p>

MK<\/strong>
Your latest album has a very cohesive sound. Were there any songs that took longer than expected to reach their final form?<\/p>

EN<\/strong>
Yes, I\u2019d say Shoganai<\/em>, the last track on the album. We started working on it in January 2024, right after filming the Venom<\/em>music video. We worked on it with David in small chunks, taking long breaks, because we had a lot of concerts and at one point almost shelved it. I finally finished my drum parts in April, and the song was fully completed only in September.<\/p>

MS<\/strong>
I love the electronic and techno elements in your music. Who came up with the idea to incorporate them into the band’s sound?<\/p>

EN<\/strong>
That\u2019s mainly thanks to David. I write the drum parts, Jessie writes the lyrics, but David writes most of the music. He loves experimenting and listens to a lot of different genres. During the pandemic, he had time to explore electronic elements and started incorporating them into our songs. That\u2019s how Darkbeat<\/em> came to be. He was definitely inspired by Electric Callboy, too. I wouldn\u2019t say they were the main inspiration, but we all love them, so their music definitely played a role in shaping our sound.<\/p>

The cover of Shoganai<\/em> features the phrase Journey through the state of mind<\/em>, which is also reflected in your music videos. Was the episodic structure of the story in these videos planned from the beginning, or did the ideas develop along the way?<\/p>

EN<\/strong>
The basic structure existed from the start\u2014we knew how the story was supposed to end, with the creation of a new life, rebuilding everything from scratch, and starting fresh. All the details you see in the videos, like in Stereo<\/em>, where Jessie has two sides\u2014a good one and an evil one\u2014came up while we were creating the songs. We brainstormed ideas about what we wanted to do for each track and how to represent them visually\u2014there was no strict plan.<\/p>

Considering the lyrics, music, and video, which song from Shoganai<\/em> are you most proud of?<\/p>

EN<\/strong>
Oh, do you mean in terms of storytelling and lyrics? I\u2019d say Shoganai<\/em>. I didn\u2019t write the story\u2014I only created the drum parts. So I can comment more as a listener and the last member to join the band\u2014and I think Shoganai<\/em>. I\u2019m really proud of this song, also from a drumming perspective. It has the fastest drum parts, or something like that, but it took me some time to find the right sound for it.<\/p>

And what about Venom<\/em>?<\/p>

EN<\/strong>
Honestly, I\u2019m more proud of Shoganai<\/em>. While Venom<\/em> is faster, Shoganai<\/em> requires more precision, which can sometimes be harder. So, in terms of drumming, I\u2019d choose Shoganai<\/em>, but also as a whole song\u2014everything in it fits together perfectly. It has elements from every other track, orchestral parts\u2014ANKOR had never done anything like that before. I\u2019m really proud of it because it\u2019s something completely different.<\/p>

The cover of your album features the title Volume One<\/em>. Does that mean we can expect Volume Two<\/em>?<\/p>

EN<\/strong>
In a way. Let\u2019s just say\u2026 something will happen! There will definitely be a new story, but how connected it will be to the first one? We\u2019ll see!<\/p>

<\/strong>What do you think makes your concerts stand out from others, and what\u2019s the craziest thing you\u2019ve ever experienced on stage?<\/p>

EN
<\/strong>Oh, well, I think it\u2019s the energy. There\u2019s tons of it at our shows\u2014nonstop, no matter the song. The guys are always jumping\u2014I can\u2019t, of course, but they never stop. Plus, there\u2019s a lot of headbanging. I really like the setlist we have on this tour because it\u2019s a headliner set, so we could do whatever we wanted, without time restrictions. It has everything\u2014crazy moments, danceable parts, and more melancholic moments.<\/p>

As for the craziest thing on stage\u2026 it would be easy to point to one of the festivals we played because they were massive. But I think the shows on this tour were even crazier because they were our own headline shows, not festivals. The audience came specifically for us, and in some cities, they were absolutely wild\u2014singing every line, crying\u2026 That makes you feel proud because you know they came just for you, and they truly care.<\/p>

If I had to pick one show, I\u2019d say Madrid. Even though the guys are from Barcelona, we all agree that Madrid was the absolute best. It was insane\u2014people knew literally every single word. It was incredible!<\/p>

<\/strong>Which bands would you love to tour with? Do you have any plans for another tour?<\/p>

EN
<\/strong>When it comes to the future and bands we\u2019d love to play with\u2026 I think I can answer for everyone because I know what they\u2019d say. So I\u2019ll list all the bands that each of us would love to support. Definitely A Day to Remember\u2014Fito and Julio always mention them, they love them. Then Bring Me The Horizon, Architects, Falling in Reverse. Recently, we\u2019ve been really into Nothing More. Honestly, we always mention the same names\u2014we also talk a lot about Electric Callboy and Spiritbox. We actually played the same day as Spiritbox in Paris, so you could say we kind of toured together\u2026 just in different places. [laughs]<\/p>

As for future plans\u2014yes, something is in the works! It\u2019s not 100% confirmed yet, but let\u2019s say it\u2019s 95%. By the end of this year, we\u2019re planning another tour, this time as a support act for a really great band in Europe. I can\u2019t reveal more details, but keep your fingers crossed!<\/p>

<\/strong>Will this tour include a show in Poland?<\/p>

<\/strong>Yes, if it happens, there will definitely be a show in Poland!<\/p>

<\/strong>You have incredibly dedicated fans. Is there any interaction that particularly stuck with you?<\/p>

EN
<\/strong>Yes! At a few concerts, there was a group of people who didn\u2019t know each other before. They met at our shows because they were die-hard fans and attended most of them. Eventually, they became friends and printed signs that said, „We\u2019ll be okay together.” When we played Oblivion<\/em>\u2014during the part where Jessie sings, „I\u2019ll be okay,” and since the song is about mental health and healing\u2014everyone held those signs up. It was really emotional because maybe some of them had gone through depression or something similar, so it felt deeply personal. It was a really beautiful moment.<\/p>

<\/strong>How did the process of signing with UNFD go, and what does it mean for the band’s future?<\/p>

EN
<\/strong>We received several offers from different labels, especially after releasing Prisoner<\/em>\u2014that\u2019s when a lot of them started reaching out. In the end, we chose UNFD because we felt they were the best fit for our sound and style. We liked the way they worked, and being with a label like that means more opportunities\u2014you meet new people, you reach a bigger audience, even outside of Europe. We\u2019re a European band, so we need support to become more recognizable on other continents. In that regard, signing a contract really helps us.<\/p>

<\/strong>How do you listen to music? What bands are currently on your playlist? Do you prefer full albums or custom playlists?<\/p>

EN
<\/strong>Honestly, I\u2019m kind of ashamed to admit it, but as a kid, I used to listen to albums from start to finish. Now, I\u2019m completely addicted to Spotify. One song here, another there\u2026 I hate to say it, but Spotify has ruined me!<\/p>

What am I listening to right now? I got really into Arcane<\/em>\u2014you know, the Netflix series based on League of Legends<\/em>. The soundtrack is incredible, and I played it non-stop for three months. It has some well-known bands and amazing musicians. Besides that, I\u2019ve been listening to a lot of Sleep Token, Falling in Reverse, Leprous, and, of course, Architects. That\u2019s pretty much it.<\/p>

<\/strong>Have you listened to the new Architects album?<\/p>

EN
<\/strong>I haven\u2019t listened to the whole album yet. I must be a failure because I still haven\u2019t done it. I\u2019ve heard one song here, one there, and that\u2019s it.<\/p>

<\/strong>I think the best song on the album is Blackhole<\/em>.<\/p>

<\/strong>Blackhole<\/em>? Actually, I haven\u2019t heard it yet. This album has Curse<\/em>, right?<\/p>

<\/strong>It was released before the album came out.<\/p>

<\/strong>Curse<\/em>, yes, I love that song. I listened to it on repeat for two months straight.<\/p>

<\/strong>After joining ANKOR, did you change your drumming approach, or did it stay the same?<\/p>

EN
<\/strong>I definitely ajusted it. It always depends on the band you play with. When I was in Nervosa, it was just fast playing, and that was it. Now, I need more technique, less speed, but more precision. I had to adjust and reinvent my playing style because it\u2019s not just about performing old songs\u2014sure, I play what the previous drummer did, with a few tweaks\u2014but for new songs, I had to find my own way of composing drum parts. And that\u2019s really cool because it opened up new horizons for me. So yes, a lot of brainstorming.<\/p>

<\/strong>What\u2019s your favorite song to play live?<\/p>

EN
<\/strong>Prisoner<\/em> is my favorite to play live. And from the older ones, I\u2019d say Hill Valley<\/em> because it doesn\u2019t require a lot of concentration while playing. Plus, it works great with the crowd\u2014it\u2019s super energetic. I really like it.<\/p>

I won\u2019t say Venom<\/em> because I have to be super tense while playing it, so I hate it. So yeah, Prisoner<\/em>, Hill Valley<\/em>, maybe Darkbeat<\/em>. And Embers<\/em>\u2014live, it\u2019s just amazing, full of energy. Everyone dances and goes crazy, it\u2019s awesome.<\/p>

<\/strong>And what\u2019s your favorite song to play at home?<\/p>

EN<\/strong><\/p>

At home? Venom<\/em>, because I don\u2019t have to please an audience. So even if I mess up, no one cares. I like playing fast, so when I\u2019m at home, I go for Venom<\/em>.<\/p>

<\/strong>Do you play any Slipknot covers?<\/p>

EN
<\/strong>Slipknot? Oh, you\u2019re killing me with this question. You\u2019re really getting me. [laughs] People = Shit<\/em>, because it was my first cover, and Surfacing<\/em>, because those were the first two songs I ever played. So those two\u2014my absolute favorites, I love playing them.<\/p>

<\/strong>When watching your performances, we can see you put all your energy into them. Where do you get the strength for that? I\u2019d pass out after three minutes, and you play an entire set.<\/p>

EN
<\/strong>I think it\u2019s just habit. I\u2019m small, so I don\u2019t have a lot of muscle strength. I\u2019ve noticed that when carrying equipment\u2014I can\u2019t lift heavy things. So it\u2019s not about physical strength because I\u2019m actually quite weak. It\u2019s more about big movements\u2014I lift my arms high to make it sound louder and more powerful. Plus, I\u2019ve been doing it since I was a kid, so my body is used to playing fast for long periods. If I started now, I\u2019d probably pass out. But I\u2019ve been playing for 17\u201318 years, so my body is, let\u2019s say, shaped for this effort. And proper technique\u2014if you have good technique, you don\u2019t need to hit super hard. If you hit at the right angle, it\u2019ll still sound loud.<\/p>

MK<\/strong>
Okay, that\u2019s all the questions we had prepared. As I mentioned, it was a great surprise to have the chance to talk with you, but we actually had more questions for Jessie. We know you won\u2019t be able to answer on her behalf.<\/p>

EN<\/strong>
I figured. (laughs) You can try asking me, but I might not know the answer. If you ask me, for example, how she picks her outfits, I have no idea. (laughs)<\/p>

MK<\/strong>
One of our questions for Jessie was about how she joined ANKOR and how she has evolved since then.<\/p>

EN<\/strong>
All I know is that they saw her at a concert when she was performing with another band. At that time, their vocalist had just left the band, so they simply asked her if she\u2019d like to join. They weren\u2019t close friends or anything \u2013 they just saw her on stage and really liked her. She joined the band, and over time, they became friends. That\u2019s all I know. (laughs)<\/p>
